2002
OMEA Conference
All
three Orchestra teachers were privileged to have the Reynoldsburg Board of
Education send us to the Ohio Music Educators Conference on February 7-9, 2002. This was an excellent opportunity to learn new teaching
techniques. We attended many
clinics, which were offered every one and half hours.
Another option was to attend concerts running at the same times.
We heard the All-State Orchestra and the Inter-collegiate jazz ensemble.
Both sounded very professional! It
is amazing how wonderful they sounded with only a couple of days worth of work.
If
there was not a clinic (which was rare) that you wanted to listen to, or a
performance, the exhibits were another great source of ideas.
With hundreds of exhibits displaying fundraising ideas, music to look
through, instrument shops, music recordings and the newest computer
technologies, to state a few, it took hours to go through and pick up all the
new information.
One
of the most valuable sessions was the Ohio String Teacher reading session.
Teachers can play through new music and decide if it might work for their
orchestra. Mrs. M. Smith played the
cello, Mrs. Gaulke played first violin, while Mrs. L. Smith played second
violin. When we finished a piece,
we would look at each other to see how that particular part was and if the other
person liked that song.
With all the clinics, concerts and exhibits, we picked up some great ideas! The teachers thought it was the best conference yet because there were new clinicians presenting new topics.
