High School Solo and Ensemble

Each year the Reynoldsburg High School Orchestra students participate in the Ohio Music Education Association’s Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event. Students prepare a piece of music and then are evaluated by a music specialist. Students are graded on tone quality, intonation, interpretation and technique. A rating is then given for the student’s performance. A I (Superior) rating is given for an outstanding performance with very few technical errors and exemplifying a truly musical expression. A II (Excellent) rating stands for an unusual performance in many respects, but not worthy of the highest rating due to minor defects in performance. A III (Good) rating is used for a performance that is acceptable but not outstanding, showing accomplishment and marked promise, but lacking one or more essential qualities. A IV(Poor) rating means a poor performance showing many technical errors, poor musical conception or lack of interpretation. A V rating is given to a student or group indicating a very poor performance with deficiencies in most of the essential factors and indicating that much careful attention should be given to the fundamentals of good performance.

Reynoldsburg Orchestra students participated in the Solo and Ensemble Event on January 30, 1999. Pickerington High School was the host site for this year’s contest.

Reynoldsburg was well represented. Seventeen students performed solos and every high school orchestra student participated in at least one ensemble.
